Number of Registered Voters Increases by 90,000 since 2000

BOSTON – The number of registered voters in Massachusetts has grown by about 90,000 since the last presidential election.

The secretary of state’s office said Friday that the state’s voter rolls have grown from 4,008,796 in 2000 to 4,098,634 today.

Of those, 48.8 percent are not enrolled in a political party, while 37.25 percent are Democrats, 12.99 percent are Republicans, .58 percent are Libertarians, and .23 percent are members of the Green-Rainbow party.

Since Primary Day on Sept. 14 the rolls have increased by 137, 273, or 3.37 percent.

Of those registered to vote, nearly 410, 000 are inactive voters, meaning they have not responded to local street lists or in other ways confirmed their status.

The number of inactive voters has decreased by about 60,000 since 2002.

On Tuesday, voters will elect the 200 members of the state House and Senate, 10 members of Congress, and their choice for president. (AP)
